The University of Fine Arts (HBK) Essen is a government-accredited university of applied sciences for art. The achievements and products of artistic and academic activities are the foundation on which HBK Essen continually builds. With a focus on the connection between artistic practice, art-related theory and scholarship, HBK Essen promotes interdisciplinary approaches to thinking and working, and examines the common ground between the applied and fine arts.

Emphasis is also placed on training and research in the fields of the professionalisation of artists and art outreach.
