Quick profile*
The College of Fine Arts – Städelschule numbers among the most experimental art academies in the world, with its courses in fine art, architecture and curatorial & critical studies. Its origins lie in an endowment by prominent Frankfurt citizen Johann Friedrich Städel in the year 1817. With his letter of endowment, Johann Friedrich Städel laid the foundations for the establishment of an art institute known as the Städelsches Kunstinstitut. He combined a training facility for young artists of demonstrated talent with an art collection that was open to the public. The Städelsches Kunstinstitut established an institution for receptive interaction with older and contemporary art and the productive development of new art forms. Over time, two autonomous institutions have emerged from this institute: the Städel Museum and the College of Fine Arts – Städelschule.
