Quick profile*

The history of the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden (HfBK) has been shaped by eminent artist professors such as Caspar David Friedrich, Oskar Kokoschka and Otto Dix. Today, the mission is to continue this story of success into the future. After all, artistic theory not only reflects the aesthetic debates of an era, but should, in fact, play a crucial role in shaping these debates. The decision to undertake a course of study in the arts fundamentally means departing from the norms of currently prevailing lifestyles. It involves risks, but above all it provides scope for freedom of thought, decision and design in the widest sense of the word. This is why our concept of teaching goes beyond the traditional categories to embrace the unity of education, providing artisan, humanist scholarly and ethical-aesthetic competencies.

Research

It is possible to complete a doctorate in the fields of art technology and conservation sciences, art history and philosophy/aesthetics. Students have the option of undertaking a post-graduate Meisterschüler programme, an ongoing master class analogous to a doctorate.

The historical anatomical teaching collection with around 500 models and specimens and the university of applied sciences' collection of some 1,500 diploma student paintings amassed during the GDR era currently constitute a core research area for art history and art technology and conservation sciences. The objective is to learn and research the history of damage and the analysis of material and historic painting techniques through the university's own objects, and at the same time make a contribution to their conservation. Another core area is archeaometry, dedicated to investigating works of art, monuments and archaeological and ethnological works using methods from the natural sciences.
