The hallmark of the European University Viadrina is internationalism. Students and teaching staff come from over 90 countries. Naturally, foreign language courses and visits to one of the 250 or so partner universities are an integral part of courses. Since being refounded in 1991, the European University has evolved into an internationally sought after address on the German-Polish border, with 25 per cent of its students and 20 per cent of academic staff coming from other countries. That makes Viadrina one of the most international universities in Germany.

Research
The core fields of research centre around the key words Europe – border – conflict.
“European studies” are combined within three research institutes in Viadrina's faculties. In addition, the Center for Interdisciplinary Polish Studies is dedicated to the key topic of “Europe”, carrying out research projects on cultural studies, legal, economic and political aspects of present-day Poland and its history.
Scholars from all over the world examine the topic of borders at the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION. They investigate borders as spatial, chronological, social and cultural phenomena, and examine processes of drawing borders, breaking down borders and creating new borders.
The Institute for Conflict Management conducts interdisciplinary research in the field of “Conflict”, and provides academic guidance in practical projects on the topics of mediation and conflict resolution and on international peace processes.
