BGR is the centre of excellence for geoscience of the German federal government. BGR is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and supports decision-making processes in politics and society. The activities of BGR are guided by the principles of sustainability, responsibility and security. Based on the results of its applied research projects, BGR provides advice of the highest standard. Scientists at BGR represent different fields of expertise such as geology, geophysics, engineering and hydrogeology. They work in an interdisciplinary manner.

BGR engages in internationa cooperation in the geosector. In the polar research BGR fulfils the obligations of Germany within the Antarctic Treaty.

BGR has a staff of 800 people. Its headquarters are in Hannover and there is a branch office in Berlin.
