The university has two core research areas which have been recognised in the research map compiled by the German Rector's Conference (HRK): adaptive signal analysis and product development and tool manufacture.

Cooperative doctoral programmes

Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences is a member of the Thuringian network for cooperative doctoral programmes and cooperates both with Thuringian universities and with numerous universities both nationally and internationally. Numerous cooperative doctorates are currently being undertaken at the university in all disciplines.
