The university, located in Weimar, the city of classicism on the river Ilm, offers a wide variety of subjects to music students – from the Department of Early Music to the Contemporary Music Ensemble. The university gives special emphasis to practice-oriented training for orchestral instruments and to modern training for music teachers at the Institute for Music Education. Research

The Franz Liszt College of Music, Weimar confers the doctoral title of “doctor philosophiae” in musicology jointly with the University of Jena; the same degree is also possible in the field of music education.
The college's core research areas include Historical Musicology, the History of Jazz and Popular Music, Transcultural Music Studies, History of Jewish Music and Musical Practice. In the field of musical education, the college's core research areas are Philosophy of Music Education, Community Music and Text Books for Music Classes at Secondary Schools and Comprehensive Schools; it is also possible to undertake a doctorate in these areas.
