The University of Greifswald, founded in 1456, is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the Baltic Sea region. From a historical point of view, it is also the oldest Swedish university. The University of Greifswald continues this close association with the Baltic Sea region to this day, but is also globally networked, enjoying exchange relationships with over 200 universities. The university offers a wide range of subjects within five traditional faculties: Theology, Law and Political Sciences, Medical, Philosophy and Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Research
The five core research areas at the University of Greifswald (Microbial Proteomics and Protein Technologies, Community Medicine and Individualised Medicine, Plasma Physics, Cultures of the Baltic Sea Region and Environmental Change: Responses and Adaptation) make innovative contributions in the areas of health and prevention, environment and climate, energy and raw materials and opportunities and risks of globalisation. First and foremost, the University of Greifswald derives its research strengths from the extensive interdisciplinary cooperation between its five faculties. Top-level research is produced both individually and in major group projects in close cooperation with regional, national and international research partners and supported by excellent research infrastructure.
