The Universität Leipzig, founded in 1409, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Today, it unites a wide range of academic disciplines in its 14 faculties and 120 institutes.

Research

The traditionally diverse range of subjects on offer is matched by interdisciplinary fundamental and applied research at the highest level. The broad spectrum of research in life sciences, humanities, social and natural sciences is reflected in three strategic fields of research with nine research profile areas, three Collaborative Research Centres and three Transregios, in which several faculties cooperate with partner universities and non-university research establishments. The Universität Leipzig has particularly strong research capabilities in the areas of global interaction, biomedicine, biotechnology, biodiversity, intelligent materials and mathematical sciences, and has developed into a partner for knowledge and technology transfer at international level in these areas.

Since 1995, the university has been part of the Halle-Jena-Leipzig alliance of universities which cooperate across state borders with the goal of mutually strengthening teaching and research.
