Research
As a “university of the information society”, the University of Paderborn focuses on applied research for the high-tech and IT sector alongside its teacher training activities. Key research areas include Intelligent Technical Systems; Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems; and Optoelectronics and Photonics. These are complemented by two Collaborative Research Centres supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), seven Research Training Groups and thirteen interdisciplinary research institutions. Researchers in these institutions work on the technologies of the future, always with an eye to the needs of society. The university’s international perspective is equally as important; almost ten per cent of all its students come from abroad. The university maintains partnerships with around 200 universities of applied science around the world. Its cooperation arrangements with universities in the region and across Germany, as well as with businesses and research groups, further enhance the university's excellent networks. Its collaboration with business supports growth in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and also generates excellent career opportunities for students.
