Quick profile*

The University of Oldenburg was founded in 1973, making it one of Germany's young universities of applied sciences. The university's namesake is the Nobel Peace Laureate Carl von Ossietzky (1889–1938), who was one of the most prominent journalists of the Weimar Republic.

Open to new approaches – that is the crux of the University of Oldenburg's ethos. Adopting new approaches means researching and teaching future-focused topics, and practising interdisciplinarity, internationalism and social responsibility on a daily basis.

Core research areas

Academic staff at the University of Oldenburg conduct high-profile research in the key topics of:
Environment and sustainability:

  • biodiversity and marine science
  • sustainability
  • future energies

Humans and technology:

  • hearing research
  • cooperative critical systems
  • sensory neuroscience
  • healthcare systems and patient-centredness

Society and education:

  • diversity and participation
  • education and social participation
  • professionalisation processes in teacher education
  • social transformation and subjectivation

Supporting early career researchers is a high priority. Established university and non-university structures also enhance Oldenburg's status as a research location. These include the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity, a Max Planck independent junior research group and three Fraunhofer groups.
