The legacy of its namesake Justus Liebig defines the university, both in applied research and teaching and in its international approach. Justus Liebig University Giessen has ties with around 90 universities around the world through agreements. Since 2006, the university has received funding under the Excellence Initiative (Cardio-Pulmonary System Excellence Cluster, ECCPS; International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture, GCSC).

Its research strengths – particularly in the key areas of cultural studies and life sciences – are demonstrated by the numerous Collaborative Research Centres, DFG Priority Programmes and Research Training Groups, LOEWE centres and core areas, leadership of the German Center for Lung Research, participation in two health research centres, and other activities.
