The University of Bamberg has served as a “house of wisdom” since the 17th century. It was founded by Prince-Bishop Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg in 1647 as a centre of humanist education. Today, it is home to four faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences; Economics and Business Administration; Human Sciences, and Information Systems and Applied Computer Sciences. The University of Bamberg supports networking with international partner universities and research institutions. Annually, over 500 students take advantage of the opportunity to study at one of nearly 300 partner universities in 60 countries. Visiting professorships provide for extensive transfer of models and knowledge to Bamberg. In 2005, the University of Bamberg was audited and certified as a “family-friendly university”, and was most recently recertified in 2015.

Research
Research at the University of Bamberg is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach and excellent networks. Our key areas, to each of which a number of disciplines contribute, often across a range of faculties, are the four topics Education & Life Planning, The Individual & Society, Languages & Cultures and Business & Markets. Doctoral programmes include DFG Research Training Groups, graduate schools and the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS), which is funded as part of the German Excellence Initiative.
