The University of Regensburg is known for its research in the core areas of Transnational Area Studies; Real Estate and Capital Markets; Chemical Photocatalysis; Immune Regulation and Tumour Diseases; RNA Biology; Computational Science / High-Performance Computing; and Nanoscience.

The university's graduate centre for the support and training of early career researchers (WIN) provides emerging researchers at the university with advice on creating optimal framework conditions and developing strategic perspectives, and promotes their international visibility.

The university’s research and technology transfer facility, FUTUR, promotes dialogue between business and academia. The BioPark, a start-up centre with a focus on biotechnology and life sciences, and the TechBase, a technology and innovation centre for start-ups, are both located in close proximity to the campus.
